He is Principal Investigator of the SCOTS and CMSW projects, and he has written and edited various books and articles on Scots and corpus-based language study, including Language and Scottish Literature, The Edinburgh Companion to Scots (with Jane Stuart-Smith and J. Scotland's national poet, Edwin Morgan, celebrated the inauguration of the new Scottish Parliament building in October 2004 with a poem entitled "Open the Doors!". In it he recalls the the medieval court poets and the Enlightenment thinkers and claret-soaked drinkers of Scotland's past, before looking forward to a bold, uncertain future. This talk takes Morgan's poem as a point of departure to introduce some contemporary Scottish writers, from different parts of Scotland, who, like their literary antecedents, write in different varieties of English and Scots. The talk considers the different literary languages of Scotland and their relation to the language of the people, as it is spoken on the streets and in the school playgrounds today. Some examples of this spoken language has been recorded and is available online, to search and listen to, in the Scottish Corpus of Texts and Speech (SCOTS) - the talk will also introduce this free resource and tell you how to access it from the comfort of your own computer.
Followed bya presentation of the St Andrew's Scots Society band Scottish food. For the poem, see http://www.scottish.parliament.uk/nmCentre/events/holyroodOpening/edwinMorgan.htm For the SCOTS corpus, see http://www.scottishcorpus.ac.uk
