To experience mindful reading, observing and assessing first reactions; to put ourselves in our students’ shoes and reflect on the initial encounter with an unfamiliar, challenging literary text; to reflect on and articulate individual reactions to text and, by doing so, shifting the focus from imparting literary knowledge to embracing the uniqueness of the way each individual engages with text.
-Mindful shared reading session
-Practical advice on specific set texts
First part: Mindful shared reading session and literary workshop. A small selection of ‘challenging’ texts – very short fiction and poetry - will be read aloud and discussed. Participants will be encouraged to read ‘mindfully’, i.e. deeply and reflectively, trying to observe, capture and embrace the feelings and thought-processes involved in the reading experience. The discussion will be stimulated by questions posed by myself although my role is to embrace the group’s reactions and follow the path that emerges from the situation itself, taking care to keep the conversation to engagement with the text, subtly guiding it to an in-depth analysis and providing expert literary advice where necessary. The atmosphere should be informal and conducive to open discussion. The purpose of this session is to enable teachers to put themselves in their students’ shoes when confronted with unfamiliar texts, while, at the same time, experiencing the power of motivation that lies in the joy of mindful reading.
Second part: Practical advice on specific set texts. Working on a small selection of set texts (a short story and two poems, for example, as requested by the school), this session will focus on tackling the practicalities of a reading session in the classroom:
• Transforming indifference, lack of engagement and negative reactions to text into positive, creative reader-response
• Reading group management and integrating different reading styles: how to guide and support whilst respecting personal response
• Types of graduated questions for discussion
• Helping students articulate personal response to text
