- Discuss main themes and the use of rhetorical and theatrical devices for the creation of meaning.
- Explore key passages through close reading.
- Explore different activities for the classroom.

- Explore key passages through close reading.
- Explore different activities for the classroom.
The following topics will be dealt with in this short seminar:
1) Characters and characterization, symbols, biblical references, pragmatic elements.
2) The use of pathos, ethos and logos in the main speeches.
3) Historical vs. fictional facts.
4) Importance of the context of production of the play: McCarthyism.
5) Tensions and main themes in the play: Science vs. Religion, Literal vs. Literary interpretation of the Scriptures, Creationism vs. Evolutionism, Importance of Free Thought, the North and the South of the US, the Country and the City, Fundamentalism, Populism
6) Elements of Greek tragedy in the play.

The facilitator will present the topics. Participants will be required to work on extracts to explore key moments in the novel and discuss how meaning is produced through close analysis of language. Participants will also work on classroom activities that can be replicated with their own students. Debates will be carried out to facilitate understanding of the different parts of the play
