1) The Themes of Isolation, Media manipulation, Fear, Cleanliness, Patriotism, Cult of Personality, Imperialism versus Communism, Translating Culture
2) Juche, Stalinism, Kimilsungism, Maoism
3) Similarities and differences between the two texts considering that the travelogue was written by a Canadian animator and cartoonist in 2003 and the story was written between 1989 and 1995 by an unknown North Korean writer, whose manuscript was smuggled out of the country in 2013.

The facilitator will present the main topics. Participants will work on extracts to explore key moments in the graphic novel and the short story, apply some theoretical concepts and discuss meaning through close analysis of language and pictures. Two movies are recommended: Underground (1996) by Emir Kusturica and Good Bye Lenin! (2003) by Wolfgang Becker
