British author Kazuo Ishiguro won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2017 for his "novels of great emotional force". Ishiguro’s fiction delves into the intricate inner worlds of characters who struggle with scarring memories and experiences. They tend to engage in a process of self-delusion and fictionalization, in an attempt to make sense of their lives and come to terms with their pasts. In The Buried Giant (2015), Ishiguro resorts to the legendary Arthurian cycle to explore such topics: Axl and Breatrice are an elderly married couple who set out on a journey to find their lost son. As they travel across a country devastated by the war between Saxons and Britons and shrouded in mist, Axl and Beatrice begin to reminisce about their lives together and to wonder if the forgetfulness caused by the foggy breath of a she-dragon is a blessing or a curse.
