Protest. Stories of Resistance is a specially commissioned anthology of short stories published by indie publishers Comma Press of Manchester to celebrate Britain’s long tradition of grassroots social movements: from the Peasant’s Revolt in 1381 to the Anti-War in Irak protests of 2003, this collection invites us to reflect on the various instances of ‘people power’ which have largely shaped the history of Great Britain.

This workshop focuses on a small sample of stories from this book including, notably, those tackling the early 20th Century Suffragette Movement and the Irak War of 2003, complemented by a selection of poems.
After a very brief introduction, the facilitator will invite and contribute avenues of inquiry into the short stories which participants will have read prior to the workshop.
The discussion will seek to embrace the various readings and interpretations of the texts that will emerge, as well as reflections on the intersections of Literature and History and the different ways of approaching these. All of which will be further deepened and extended by considering a selection of thematically related poems which will be read and discussed on the day.
Participants will the be encouraged to collaboratively consider ways of transferring their own experience of the texts into their teaching practice, focusing, primarily, on the pedagogical value of narrative.
