Martha Patricia De Cunto

She holds a Master of Arts in Literary Linguistics from the University of Nottingham, UK and is currently doing a PhD in Literature at the University of Buenos Aires. She is also pursuing a Master's Degree in Cultural Studies at UNR. She has been a lecturer in American Literature, Children's Literature, YAL Literature and Introduction to Literary Studies at I.E.S. Lenguas Vivas "Juan Ramón Fernández". She has also taught Creative Writing at ISP “Joaquín V. González”. She has been a teacher of Language and Literature in several schools in Buenos Aires for more than 30 years.
Literature readers and readers of graphic novels
- Revise the language of comics according to McCloud (1994).
- Discuss the genre of memoir and autobiography.
- Analyze words and pictures in the panels and the collaboration between them.
- Explore use of time and transition techniques to signal fictional present and past.
- Explore visual representation of identity.
- Analyze the use of colors in different parts of the graphic memoir.

The following topics will be dealt with in this short seminar:

1) Difference between refugees and immigrants according to Viet Thanh Nguyen (2017) (A Vietnamese American fiction writer and cultural critic.)
2) The construction of motherhood of Vietnamese American refugees
3) The past and present experiences of Vietnamese refugees in Vietnam and in the U.S.
4) The representation of traumatic war experiences in graphic memoirs
5) The concepts of memory and postmemory according to Hirsh (2008) 'The Generation of Postmemory'
The facilitator will introduce the writer/illustrator and a brief reference to some of the main events in the recent history of Vietnam mentioned in the memoir. Participants will be required to work on extracts to explore key moments in the graphic memoir and discuss how meaning is produced through close analysis of language and pictures.
