- To promote an analysis of the novel and the BBC film, based on the historical and cultural context and reflecting on key concepts such as immigration, diaspora and homeland.
- To reflect upon the themes of home, nation and nationality, cultural identity and belonging.
- To provide literature teachers with ideas and possible pathways to analyse and work with the text in preparation for the AS Literature Exam and discuss ways of facilitating students’ reading and interpretation.

- Comparative analysis with the BBC film version (2009), starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Naomie Harris and Ruth Wilson.
