Julian Barnes’s The Only Story (2018) revolves around the life of Paul Roberts, a young man who, at 19, falls in love with a 48-year-old married woman called Susan. As the novel unfolds and despite the promising beginning of the relationship, we witness the deterioration of the lovers’ affair, as Susan gradually slides into depression, paranoia and eventual madness. An older, more mature Paul dwells on the nature of love, the complexity of human relationships and the slipperiness of memory. In constant dialogic relationship with Flaubert’s Sentimental Education (1869), The Only Story offers a profound examination of timeless themes such as love, loss, betrayal and the illusion of permanence in an ever-shifting world.
