In Summer (2020), Ali Smith interweaves the lives of Sacha Greenlaw, her mother and her brother with those of characters from previous instalments of her seasonal quartet – Autumn (2016), Winter (2017), Spring (2019). They are all placed on a trip to Norfolk, which gives Smith the chance to explore her recurrent themes of loss, estrangement, the fictionalization of reality, and the nature of art and representation. Overshadowed by the aftermath of Brexit and the early stages of the Covid-19 pandemic, Summer also offers an insightful examination of our search for true human connections, 0ur contradictory essences and the possibility of forgiveness in our contemporary world.
